Solstice
Chapter 17
I
tumbled along, view askew as I spun wildly about within the
vortex.
If I had had eyes, closing them would have been in order as the
constant
twisting and twirling was making me more than a little sick.
I
watched helplessly as a large boulder shot past me, collided squarely
with
a rather large tree trunk, shattered the tree trunk into a billion tiny
bits, and continued on its way as if nothing had happened.
The
billion tiny bits dispersed within the maelstrom *snap!* just like
that.
Gone, like they never were...
I,
for one, was feeling dispersed enough as it was, and the idea of being
whacked into even more tiny bits by some malevolent hunk of rock was
none
to appealing, let me tell you. *laughs*
Slowly,
my tumble began to level a bit, until finally my awareness was, for the
most part, focused directly ahead of me....
And
the image that swam into view before me was Awesome!
For
whereas
the boiling, churning mass directly around me was terrifyingly real,
the
vortex, seen as a Whole, was breath takingly surreal.
Thick,
phosphorescent clouds roiled and twined into tightly packed smoky
ropes,
each braid awash with golden or silvery glitters. The smoky,
cloudy
ropes snaked and twisted into each other, forming a thick shimmering
column
which spiraled downward into infinity.
The
entire spiraling column crackled with multi colored sheets of pure
plasma
energy... Each bolt racing back and forth, up and down, from top to
bottom,
passing over and under and through each other... wave after wave of
rainbow
hues spiraling and dancing to a different rhythm than the heavier
particles.
Within
the calmer Eye of the vortex raced a multitude of larger chunks;
boulders,
trees... pollen, bits of dust like me... Some surfing along in a groove
as I was, others ricocheting madly about, smashing into a neighbor, or
flying off at a tangent, disappearing within the maelstrom without...
And
there I was, cruising along at Warp Speed, right down the middle of it,
with no nose to obstruct my view *laughs*
"If
this is Death, I'm not sorry" I said, which scared the bloody Hell out
of me! After my failure with the Force, I had just Assumed...
I
gave it another try, and in my best Starship Captains voice said
"Steady
as she goes, Helm"
And
almost fainted away at the rich baritone Voice that rolled along the
vortex
with me!
The
Force had failed earlier...
...
but The Voice?
