Solstice
Chapter 2
The red sandy plains melted into
grassy, rolling hills, and the skies shifted from greens to blues with
each passing step. Distances had always been odd here, a
single
step
could cover miles, or mere inches...
The first
thing
that struck me as
odd upon entering the hills and meadows surrounding Yggdrasll was the
forest.
The forest had always been upon my left during my approach to the tree,
now, however, it was upon my right, and loomed closer than normal...
Now like I
said,
I'd been warned
about the forest more than once, and by a variety of guides, so was
keeping
more than just an eye on it as I made my way towards the
tree. I
increased my stride a bit, eating up the land in giant gaits *giggles*
kinda like 'seven league boots' yes? It's fun
walking
there...
Well, I
crested a
hill, and was
stepping off it, kinda like coming down a stairway and taking two steps
at once... Anyway, I was going kinda fast and I had to look where I was
going, just needed to flash my full attention forward for a few, ya
know?
That was all
it
took. The
forest reached out across the land beneath me as I stepped down. 'Oh...
And there I
was in
the forest.
'...shit.'
I
froze.
It's not pitch black
here, but dark. And unless you're on a trail progress can be
slow,
and dangerous. Getting lost is a biggy
too. And
at the moment, the only point of reference I had was that I was facing
Yggdrasll. *sigh* Tha's not a lot to go on...
My eyes
began to
adjust to the dimmer
light, and yep, this a nasty part of the woods all
right.
Not
the worst, but nasty. Some thorny things here and there, some
tangly
vines, a few spiders and what not. I stood waiting for a bit,
but
no one, no creature came... Perhaps somebody just wanted to slow me up
a bit?
Then I saw
the
eyes peering at me.
Almond shaped and richly brown, not quite Asian, hauntingly familiar...
As our gazes
met
her, (and it Was
Her) her eyes narrowed. They say all emotions are seen
through
the
eyes, even ones soul can be gazed upon through those
windows...
In
that instant I felt that to be true for the frown of distaste that
flashed
from her eyes was almost overwhelming.
I staggered
back,
shaking my head
to clear it. When I looked again the eyes were gone....
And so was
my
bearing on Yggdrasll...
I
was Lost. |
